Some people are more at risk for heat-related illness than others. What may just feel hot to some, may be extreme and dangerous to others, due to age, health, or occupation. Of course, construction workers and others who work outside, like farmers or utility workers, top the list for those professionals at high risk for heat-related illness.
Senior citizens, especially those with chronic illnesses, have a harder time adjusting to extreme conditions. What’s more, some medications may affect a person’s ability to regulate their body temperature. Check in on your older relatives, friends and neighbors, especially those who may be living alone, to make sure they have access to an air-conditioned space during the hot summer weather.
Children under the age of 2 are also very vulnerable in
extreme heat as they sweat less and generate more
heat than adults.
