Some medications such as those used to treat allergies, high blood pressure, and mental health conditions can put you at increased risk for heat-related illness because they can impair the body’s ability to regulate heat and sweat. Other medications, such as insulin and epinephrine (EpiPen) can malfunction if left in the heat and diuretics used to treat high blood pressure can cause the loss of electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, that help keep you hydrated.
Check with your pharmacist to better understand how your medications can affect you in extreme heat or be compromised themselves by high temperatures.
